CreativeHub Living Room Film Screenings are a monthly event presented by CreativeHub1352. The series invites the community to come together in a relaxed and welcoming environment to experience a wide range of films and conversations.
For this first edition, the evening will incorporate three short films provided courtesy of the NFB, My Knitting Circle (directed by Alexandra Knowles), Boat People (directed by Thao Lam & Kjell Boersma) and King’s Court (directed by Serville Poblete).
These films explore themes of home, migration, belonging, care, creativity, identity, and community. In My Knitting Circle, Alexandra Knowles explores belonging and community through the bonds created in a local knitting group in Whitehorse, Yukon. While Boat People is an animated film that explores immigration and displacement through the metaphor of the resourceful, resilient and courageous ant. Lastly, King’s Court is a coming of age story, framed by the characters’ love of basketball and their community entanglements in the Toronto neighbourhood, Bleecker Street.
Itinerary: Doors open at 7:30pm, films begin at 8:00pm, and there will be time between each film to participate in a community discussion. The total running time of all three films is 41min, and the event closes at 9:00pm
Refreshments: Popcorn and soda will be available for purchase throughout the evening.
Content/Trigger Warnings: death, suicide, mental health, emotional distress, harm, grief, migration/displacement-related trauma, loneliness and isolation.
Additional Content Note: King’s Court may also include discussions/themes relating to systemic inequality, masculinity, and social pressure through the lens of sport and community life.
