An introduction to writing stories/ novels for children, using published work as examples and taking part in short exercises, culminating in creating an extended piece of writing aimed at a particular age group.
What will be covered on the course?
- We will look at published work, covering different age groups.
- We will take part in a variety of written exercises to practice different styles of writing.
- We will consider appropriate content and vocabulary for different ages, as well as layout and use of illustrations.
- Learners will practice writing through a variety of exercises and will be given feedback to enable improvement.
- Learners will plan and create an extended piece of writing aimed at an age group of their choice.
What will learners achieve by the end of the course?
- To recall key terms
- To recognise the importance of appropriate layout/ vocabulary/ content/ use of illustration or imagery
- To apply knowledge by writing in a variety of styles aimed at different age groups
- To develop critical faculties by offering peer feedback
- To evaluate published works to identify what works/ doesn’t work in writing
- To plan, write and edit an extended piece of writing
What skills or knowledge do learners already need to have to attend the course?
- Some understanding of child development
- Some writing experience
- An interest in reading and writing

To book and enrol on one of our courses, you must have been living in England and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years.
Some exceptions may apply if you are living in England with evidence of the right to remain and are from an EEU/EEAU country (completion of a questionnaire will be required).
