Creative Writing: The Thought Beneath the Thought
About this Event
A character says they are happy for someone.
They offer to help.
They insist it does not matter.
Then why are they still thinking about it?
Some of the most revealing moments in writing happen beneath the character’s first thought. Envy disguises itself as concern. Longing becomes usefulness. A memory can change each time it is recalled. The body understands something the mind is still refusing to name.
In this edition of The Writer’s Room, we will enter that private, contradictory space.
Through a short craft conversation and a series of guided writing exercises, we will explore the thoughts characters revise, suppress, misunderstand and almost admit.
You will write toward the moment when the polished explanation begins to crack and a more complicated truth appears underneath.
You may write fiction, memoir, autofiction, personal essay or something that does not yet have a name.
Come with a notebook, curiosity and a character who may not be as honest as they think.
What are they telling themselves?
And what does the page already know?
