Creative Writing: The Room has Rules
About this Event
Why does a character become a different person when they enter a different room?
An overcrowded damp bus on a rainy day. A family kitchen. A workplace. A hotel lobby. A childhood bedroom. A party where everyone else seems to know how to behave.
Places come with rules, even when nobody says them out loud.
In this edition of The Writer’s Room, we’ll explore what happens when setting stops being background and starts applying pressure.
- Who belongs here?
- Who knows the rules?
- Who gets to relax?
- Who is performing?
And what changes the moment somebody walks through the door?
Through a series of guided writing exercises, we’ll use place to generate tension, reveal character and discover what a room can make someone do.
You are welcome to write fiction, memoir, autofiction, personal essay, hybrid work or something that does not yet have a name.
No pressure to write autobiographically.
No pressure to share.
Bring a notebook, curiosity and a character who thinks they know how to behave.
The room may have other ideas.
