Ages 18 and up admitted.
All supplies are provided, and participants will take home their remaining materials.
Capped water bottles are permitted in the Create Space during this class.
There will be a break for participants to buy lunch at the museum café or nearby in Salem.
Celebrate Saints, Sinners, Lovers, and Fools: 300 Years of Flemish Masterworks with an oil painting workshop tailored to beginners and those seeking to refresh their skills.
The session begins with a guided tour led by Karina Corrigan, Associate Director–Collections and H.A. Crosby Forbes Curator of Asian Export Art, who will offer an exclusive look at the Flemish masterpieces featured in the exhibition. Afterward, learn the basics of oil painting from artist Jessica Yurwitz, owner of Slow River Studio.
Follow her step-by-step instructions to learn how to choose and use materials and build a foundation in key painting concepts like hue and value. You’ll also explore a system for mixing and matching colors and be inspired by works from the exhibition. Discover how oil paints aren’t just for “serious artists”— they can be for anyone starting their creative journey.
PEM’s Creative Foundations classes (for ages 18 and up) aim to engage both complete beginners and lifelong learners looking to deepen their artistic knowledge. These classes connect participants with PEM’s collection and exhibitions and are led by guest artists and PEM curators.
