Creative Class - Sunprinting with Digital Negatives
Schedule
Sat Aug 16 2025 at 02:00 pm to 04:30 pm
UTC-05:00Location
1301 3rd Street SE Cedar Rapids, IA 52401 | Cedar Rapids, IA
It works by placing a digitally printed negative of your image onto light-sensitive paper and exposing it to bright sunlight. After rinsing the paper in water, places where the negative was blocking the light will be white on a background of blue.
You’ll need to send a few digital photos to us ahead of time so that the negatives can be made. See below for instructions, or stop by Tree of Liminality at 1301 3rd Street SE.
By the end of the class you’ll leave with several cyanotype prints that can be framed or used in any paper craft. You'll also have the knowledge base needed to make your own digital negatives in the future.
Missa has taught alternative photographic processes, including cyanotype, to a wide range of people, from casual art clubs to college classes. She is the owner of Tree of Liminality and cofounder of Farmhouse Art Collective.
**Instructions for sending photos to Missa**
Email 3 or 4 full resolution jpgs to [email protected] or text them to 812-219-6119. You can also bring them to her shop on a flash drive.
Please note that, while the images made in the class will be blue-and-white, the files you provide should still be full color.
More tips on choosing photos for the class: The cyanotype process softens details, and often loses information in the highlight area altogether. It also creates a dreamlike effect.
Because this process requires bright sunlight, please note there will be a “rain date” on Saturday, August 23rd from 2:00-4:30pm. If the class does have to be postponed due to weather, you’ll be notified by the morning of August 16th. Thanks for your understanding.
