About this Event

Book Design Creative Class - Japanese Stab Binding

In this class led by our Artist in Residence, you’ll learn how to create beautiful hand-bound books through the process of Japanese stab binding (JSB). Books made with this technique have an exposed spine and use decorative stitching to bind single sheets of paper together with a front and back cover.

The class is suitable for beginning bookbinders. We’ll start with the basics of punching holes through the cover and interior pages, and executing a classic 4-hole stitch. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn variations that involve additional punches and more complex stitching patterns.

At the end of the class, you’ll leave with two complete handmade books that can be used for sketching, journaling, or enjoying as works of fiber art. All materials will be provided for making blank books, but you can also bring your own if there’s something specific you’d like to use.

Japanese stab bound books are particularly well-suited for displaying photographs, artwork, or creative writing. Missa will be available to talk to you about the content of your book in the weeks before the course. You can reach her by email at [email protected], phone at 812-219-6119 or stop by her shop at the Market. It’s called Tree of Liminality.

If you’re interested in taking this class, but can’t afford a ticket, there are a limited number of spots available for volunteer assistants. Please contact Missa by one of the methods listed above for more information.

Missa has taught book design techniques to wide range of people, from casual art clubs to home school students to college classes. She’s designed and created books and zines for both herself and others, and publishes under the imprint of First and Last Draft Press. She is the Artist in Residence at NewBo City Market and Cofounder of Farmhouse Art Collective.

This will be held in the Culinary Kitchen, within NewBo City Market.
