These Visual Arts, Poetry, Music and Dance workshops will be a gentle introduction to art forms that might be new to encourage you to seek further experience. Regular creative activity will increase your wellbeing and joy as express your inner being.
VISUAL ART at 10:00am - Squiggla™
Developed in Aotearoa New Zealand, Squiggla, the outreach project of the Chartwell Trust, is a hands-on creative visual thinking programme. We increasingly know the importance of
creativity for well-being and no matter what age you are, you can exercise and train to think more creatively. Research has proven that participating in the arts can help delay the onset of dementia as we age. After all, learning is what our brains and bodies do all the time.
Squiggla mark making activities tap into the senses, our hands, eye, mind and heart. Squiggla does not seek meaning from familiar, recognisable images. So come along to our Squiggla workshop where we encourage all to break from familiar habits, disrupt barriers to creating in the moment and relax into the process of playful exploration. You will have fun experimenting with lines, dots and marks and let creative flow take over. We strip away the pressure to draw something out there or copy something, leaving you with the joy of pure, playful mark making.
POETRY at 11:00am – Tim Heath
Poetry, especially for those of us who were born before 1960 was made inaccessible by our experiences at school where we fed a diet of poems extolling the countryside and history of Britain. Many of these poems were, and are, wonderful but they, and the often complex ways in which they were constructed, did not make us think this was a world we could enter.
The aim of the hour is to give participants a glimpse of modern poetry in Aotearoa and demonstrate that they can be a poetry creator both as a reader and a writer. I believe that in all of us there is a desire to record our thoughts in the best way we can. It is hoped the poetry and small exercises in this session will help unlock this creativity.
MUSIC at 12:00pm – Ukulele
Eliette’s Music Academy is excited to be hosting the Ukulele Workshop. This workshop is open to musicians of all levels, from complete beginners to seasoned players. Using the internationally acclaimed Musical Futures programme, this workshop offers a fun, hands-on approach that gets participants playing songs from the very first session. Guided by experienced EMA tutors, you will learn chords, strumming patterns and songs in a supportive environment. This is a community-focused event, with the main goal of bringing people together to connect, share, and make music as a group. This workshop is the perfect opportunity to try something new, develop your skills, meet new people, and
experience the joy of music together.
DANCE - SeniorsDance at 1:00pm
This workshop is an introduction to movement based on contemporary dance. We will start sitting on chairs to warm up our spines, upper body and legs then progress to standing to
address issues of balance, coordination and walking. The class will also include creative activities and tasks to improve the memory and thinking process. Wear clothes you can move in and also bring soft, clean shoes to change into.
SeniorsDANCE was established in over 10 years ago in Mt Albert to provide especially for those over 65. Many seniors have experienced the joy of moving their body, improving their
balance and expressing creative ideas. Some have also chosen to perform in the ASPiRE seniors dance show and other various opportunities. SeniorsDANCE is taught as a performing art but you don’t have to perform to be included.
