About this Event

Share your story. Learn the power of personal narrative and the art and power of vulnerability. In this fun 6-week class, you take your life experiences and develop personal stories that are relatable, engaging, and entertaining. This workshop explores the art of oral storytelling including story creation, enhancement, and presentation. Learn simple practical story guidelines and step-by-step tools, to create incredible honest stories from your life experience. 

Kent Whipple is the founder of the storytelling program at the Unexpected Productions Improv School, where teaches intro and advanced classes, and is the narrative coach for the improv ensemble. He also hosts Inside Story, a storytelling show at Unexpected Productions. He is a co-producer for The Story Collider – Seattle. In March of 2022, he was featured on the PBS show, Stories from the Stage, which illustrates the power of real stories told by masterful storytellers and is produced by WORLD Channel in collaboration with GBH. Throughout the PNW, he has performed at Fresh Ground Stories, the Intersections Festival, Over the Rainbow Storytelling, Bawdy Storytelling, Bad Date Storytelling, Over the Rainbow Storytelling, and Do Tell: Humorous Storytelling.

This workshop is perfect for novice storytellers, or a chance to add to the skillset of a seasoned performer. Come share your story.

Attendance at the first session of your class is mandatory as it sets the agenda for the entire class. If you think you will have to miss the first class, please consider registering for the next quarter.

All students are required to be vaccinated to be in a UP class. Please have your proof of vaccination ready to show your instructor at your first class.

How to identify story arc

identify the difference between scenic detail versus narrative description

How to identify story-worthy material

Teacher Bio:

Kent is the founder of the storytelling program at the Unexpected Productions Improv School, where teaches intro and advanced classes, and is the narritive coach for the improv ensemble. He also hosts Inside Story, a storytelling show at Unexpected Productions. He has participated in many Moth StorySLAMs (and won the first Moth StorySLAM he attended) and Moth GrandSLAMs. He has been featured on the Risk! podcast three times. By audience vote, he was named Best of Bawdy Storyteller for 2019. He is a story coach for Ignite Seattle. In March of 2022, he will be featured on the PBS show, Stories from the Stage, which illustrates the power of real stories told by masterful storytellers and is produced by WORLD Channel in collaboration with GBH . He has mentored with Natalie Goldberg author of Writing Down the Bones, and studied with Larry Rosen: The Moth, Kevin Allison, and Brad Lawrence: Risk! Podcast, Margot Leitman, author of Long Story Short: The Only Storytelling Guide You Will Ever Need, Matthews Dicks, author of Storyworthy: Engage, Teach, Persuade, and Change Your Life through the Power of Storytelling, Joan Logghe – Poet Laureate of New Mexico, Ron Reid: Stand-Up Comedy, Matt Smith: Improv for Writers, and Randy Dixon: Improv for Writing.
