Curious about bookbinding and Japanese paper? Learn about both! Make a soft-covered, coptic-stitch journal with a six-washi text block!
About this Event

Join us for an immersive bookbinding workshop where you'll learn the art of creating a beautiful, hand-bound journal using 6 different, exquisite Japanese papers suitable for mark-making of all kinds. This workshop is perfect for beginners and offers a unique opportunity to explore a variety of papers.
You’ll leave with two finished blank journals (a small one for practice, and the full journal with six types of washi - including Heritage Washi) in which you can test different pens and inks to help you find the perfect paper for future projects.
What You'll Learn:

  • Soft covered Coptic stitch: Learn step-by-step how to bind your book using a structure that lays flat when open, making it ideal for writing, sketching, or displaying your work.
  • Paper Selection: Learn about the qualities of 6 different types of washi (Japanese paper), plus one extra-special paper with unique properties.

Why Attend?

  • Hands-On Experience: Get practical bookbinding experience with expert guidance in a supportive environment. Learn from experts about Japanese papers.
  • Take Home Your Creation: Leave with a beautifully bound book that you crafted yourself. Test the pages using your favourite inks, brushes and pens and be confident knowing you can make more books using the papers you like the best.

Who Should Attend? This workshop is designed for beginners, so no prior experience is necessary. Whether you're a writer, artist, or simply someone interested in learning a new craft, this workshop is for you. Please note, we will not be testing the paper with pen or ink during the workshop unless time permits.

Come and discover the joy of bookbinding in a relaxed and creative setting. We look forward to seeing you there!

All necessary tools and supplies will be provided.

Participants are asked to bring the following:

  • a notebook and pen
  • an apron or wear studio clothes
  • your lunch!

Please note: ticket price includes $145 workshop fee, plus Eventbrite fees and hst for a total cost of $176.01
