About this Event
Crafting Connections: Walking Stick Workshop for Veterans
📅 Date: Saturday, February 15, 2025
⏰ Time: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
📍 Location: Will be provided upon selection.
Join us for the first session of our three-part Walking Stick Class, where Veterans will embark on a meaningful journey to craft walking sticks for fellow Veterans. Whether the recipient is a family member, a resident at the Richard Anderson State Home, or part of the VA community, these walking sticks will serve as symbols of connection and support.
Details:
- Participants: Four Veterans will be selected to participate in this exclusive opportunity.
- Pre-Class Briefing: A Zoom meeting will be held before the first session to provide participants with an overview of the class.
Class Schedule:
1️⃣ First Class (Feb 15): Learn the philosophy behind the craft, find the perfect walking stick in the woods, and understand the full process.
2️⃣ Second Class: Work on the stick—straightening and preparing it for carving.
3️⃣ Third Class: Shape, carve, and design the walking stick.
This series will take place over three weekends, allowing ample time to create a meaningful and polished final product.
Important Note: Registering for this event does not guarantee attendance. Participants will be selected from the registrants.
This workshop is all about giving back—each walking stick crafted will be gifted to a fellow veteran, fostering community, connection, and support. 💙
We appreciate your interest and dedication to making a difference!
Reserve Your Spot Today! Limited to four participants. Please ensure you can commit to all three sessions.
About the Facilitator: Rod Thornton
Rod, a native of Fish Creek, Texas, showcased his artistic talent early on, earning blue ribbons for five consecutive years in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Contest. His career took a transformative turn from the Air Force reserve in 1987 to becoming a Houston Firefighter in 1990, where he was honored with two citizen awards and a Citation of Valor within his first three years. A life-altering car accident in 1994 led him to pivot to public relations within the fire department, eventually retiring in 2005 to focus on his passion for comics.
Rod launched “Angel Comics” in 2007, contributing to various major and independent comic publishers. His works include cover art for IDW's Ninja Turtles, designs for Dynamite Comics' Vampirella and John Carter of Mars, and more. He has also ventured into teaching, offering classes on comic creation at universities such as the University of Houston, TSU, and Rice University. A multi-talented artist, Rod's endeavors extend into music and martial arts, underpinned by his deep Christian faith and love for people. His creation, “C.O.T.A,” is currently being optioned for film, alongside other forthcoming titles.
Don't miss this opportunity to learn from an experienced artist and connect with fellow Veterans through the art of woodworking. We look forward to receiving your applications and creating a memorable and transformative experience together.
