Craft at Large puts select pieces from the Manitoba Crafts Museum and Library’s collection under magnification. Using salvaged projector lenses and microscopes, the exhibit blends scientific modes of viewing with exceptional craft. The pieces, which come from various artists, communities, cultures, mediums, and eras were all chosen for the intricacies hidden within their threads, beads, weaves, or markings, and their ability to represent a global tradition of high craftsmanship.Viewing each of the pieces under the lens, our perspective shifts. A close up look allows us to see the pieces just as the artists saw them during making. We can count threads in an intricate embroidered flower, see the individual marks of a carving tool, and discover the tiny details we might miss at a glance. Craft at Large at once celebrates fine craft objects and the process of making, inviting us to meditate, study, and be inspired by the talent, precision, and dedication of the artists showcased.
This exhibit was born out of a mutual love of fine craft by Exhibit Curator Dylan Stokes and MCML Curator Andrea Reichert. Stokes, a maker themselves, spent the summer immersed in the museum’s collection, examining each piece under magnification and marveling at technique and artistry. They designed this exhibition not merely with the intent to highlight the collection, but also with the hope that each piece inspires awe, wonder, and contemplation in the viewer.
