Craft a New Year: Introduction to Rug Hooking with Cass Gannaway
Join the Tennessee State Museum and Tennessee Craft this January for our “Craft a New Year: Learning Craft Workshop Series.”
About this Event

Class Description

Rug hooking has been passed down in Tennessee for generations, but is not as well known as many textile art skills. Join one of Tennessee’s most renowned rug hooking artists, Cass Gannaway and learn how to begin a new hobby with one of Tennessee’s oldest textile traditions. Cass will provide a history of rug hooking, overview of techniques and will lead the class to create a decorative piece designed especially for this workshop. You will spend time hooking with her guidance and also take home key tools you used in class to continue making heirloom artwork.

About the Instructor

Cass has always done several types of handwork such as needlepoint, sewing and knitting. She moved to Sewanee, TN about 12 years ago. The time and place were perfect to start hooking and she began to meet with a group from Chattanooga. Her first exposure was to antique rugs and since she loved and has always lived in older homes, she started with traditional designs for my walls and floors. Her passion lies in replicating the antique rugs. More recently, she began hooking less traditional rugs using many different fabrics and fibers, often recycled, in addition to wool strips and yarn. She has traveled as far as Cape May, NJ and Albuquerque, NM and many places in between to take classes with many different teachers and has learned much from each of them.

Course fee: $110 (includes all materials for workshop)
