About this Event
This free CPD opportunity is provided by the award-winning Historic England Heritage Schools Programme funded by the DfE in partnership with Sunny Bank Mills, Farsley.
This practical course will:
· demonstrate how creating a wider place-based curriculum supports what Ofsted looks for in relation to strengthening pupil’s SMSC, developing children’s cultural capital and a school’s overall effectiveness.
· provide practical guidance, teaching activities and free resources for integrating a school’s local area and heritage into both the history and wider curriculum.
An overview of the course content includes:
· Getting started – Why, What, Where, and When
· Practical examples of planning local heritage in both history and the wider curriculum.
· What’s worth knowing: finding buildings, sites and stories on your school doorstep.
· How to create your school’s very own heritage trail.
· Exploring disciplinary concepts through local history.
· Examples of meaningful place-based learning experiences and access to free resources.
· Using Maps and Aerial Photographs to gain a sense of place and explore change over time including an opportunity to receive a bespoke map and aerial photograph resources pack created for your own school.
Exploring a regional story: Why Mills Matter!
· Explore the significance for your children of the region’s textile heritage and its very visible signs in the remaining mills which we see all around us.
· Learn about significant mills and their stories in West Yorkshire and their connection with wider world history.
· Learn how to investigate the mills on your own school doorstep.
· Guidance on where and how these fit into your history and wider curriculum.
Learn about the stories of Sunny Bank Mills. Have a guided heritage tour of the Museum & Archive with Heritage Director Rachel and the Heritage Team.
Join Sonia our Arts Engagement Co-ordinator in a creative workshop inspired by the mills rich history.
