About this Event

This free CPD opportunity is provided by the award-winning Historic England Heritage Schools Programme funded by the DfE in partnership with Sunny Bank Mills, Farsley.

This practical course will:

· demonstrate how creating a wider place-based curriculum supports what Ofsted looks for in relation to strengthening pupil’s SMSC, developing children’s cultural capital and a school’s overall effectiveness.

· provide practical guidance, teaching activities and free resources for integrating a school’s local area and heritage into both the history and wider curriculum.

An overview of the course content includes:

· Getting started – Why, What, Where, and When

· Practical examples of planning local heritage in both history and the wider curriculum.

· What’s worth knowing: finding buildings, sites and stories on your school doorstep.

· How to create your school’s very own heritage trail.

· Exploring disciplinary concepts through local history.

· Examples of meaningful place-based learning experiences and access to free resources.

· Using Maps and Aerial Photographs to gain a sense of place and explore change over time including an opportunity to receive a bespoke map and aerial photograph resources pack created for your own school.

Exploring a regional story: Why Mills Matter!

· Explore the significance for your children of the region’s textile heritage and its very visible signs in the remaining mills which we see all around us.

· Learn about significant mills and their stories in West Yorkshire and their connection with wider world history.
