Cozad Bates House - WMRJ Cleveland Local Circle

We hosted our inaugural Local Circle gathering at Edwin’s restaurant recently. To start the evening, we shared some drinks and heard from the training director of their leadership institute, who spoke about the inspiring work they do to hire, train, and support citizens returning from Pr*son. Afterwards, we broke into small table groups for rich conversations about our lived experiences, exploring how and when we first became aware of the impact of race in our own lives and in society. After a moving evening, the organizing group left feeling energized and excited about the future of this group, with lots of ideas for making our upcoming gatherings even more impactful.

Please mark your calendars for our next gathering, which will be held on Wednesday, December 10th at the Cozad Bates House, once home to the Cozad family, who was active in Northeast Ohio's Underground Railroad network. The venue now features an exhibit highlighting the history of slavery leading up to the Civil War, stories of local activists and freedom seekers, and insights into how the legacy of slavery continues to shape contemporary social issues.

Doors will open at 5:00 pm for a happy hour, with light programming and group conversations beginning at 5:45 pm with discussions focusing on Upstanders – those we admire for having the courage to stand up for what they believe in.
