Like learning about nature and don't mind a swear word? Come learn about urban wildlife and space!
About this Event

Join us for an outdoor evening of presentations about local ecology and space! This program is intended for adults only.

Make sure to come early! Miridae Mobile Nursery will be here from 6:30 to 7:30pm!

Urban Coyotes

Coyotes play an important role in helping to shape the natural communities in which they live. As predators, they help keep populations of mice, rabbits and other small animals in check. They also prey on other predators, such as raccoons and skunks and this works to the benefit of birds, mice and other small animals. But what are you to do when you see them in your neighborhood? Come learn more about these canines and what we can do to coexist with them.

Guy Galante, a Carmichael, CA native, is a certified CA Naturalist, Bird Language Leader, home school educator and wildlife photographer. He holds a BA in Geography and an MS in Recreation Administration, and is a credentialed teacher. With almost 20 years of environmental education experience, he has gained a strong background in natural history, native plant restoration, organic farming, curriculum and program development, and creating and delivering a diverse range of nature-based programs for youth, adults, and families. He is a published photographer and has been photographing coyotes in Sacramento for nearly two decades while advocating for humane coexistence with the area’s urban and suburban wildlife.

Space in Your Face! presents Space Bitch™️

Join Astrobiologist, Julia DeMarines, as she debuts Space Bitch, her 18+ lewd, unhinged space comedy personality. You might be thinking, "Is this going to be like a bunch of Uranus jokes?" My friends... we will be probing much deeper into the void than #basic space jokes. So come with an open mind, and we just might get a little intimate with the infinite.

Julia DeMarines is an astrobiologist, National Geographic Explorer, educator, and science communicator who specializes in biosignature and technosignature (SETI) detection, the ethics of METI (Messaging ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) who's trying to finish a MSc at Berkeley even though she already has one. Outside of academia she enjoys garbage humor, running (but only after), climbing, adventure, pirates, nuclear power, being a LOTR wh0re, and basically most things except raw tomatoes (thanks, DENETHOR).

Project Phoebe

Curious about urban animals and why ecologists study them? Project Phoebe is an urban ecology research project studying Black Phoebes in the California Central Valley to learn more about how birds and other animals respond to urbanization and other forms of environmental change.

Sage Madden and Jacob Johnson are key in designing and running Project Phoebe. They’ll be joined by Siiri Hamberg, a team mate on the project.

Sage (she/they) is an Ecology PhD candidate in the Patricelli lab at the University of California Davis. She is pursuing her PhD to study how animals respond behaviorally and physiologically to human-driven environmental change, including urbanization and climate change.

Jacob (he/him) is an Animal Behavior PhD student who is interested in studying how animals use different behavioral strategies to cope with unusual and/or harsh environments. His research projects feature work in cityscapes with Black Phoebes, wildfire-affected areas with Dark-eyed Juncos, and in the lab with Wolf Spiders and Carpenter Bees.

Siiri (she/her) is a first-year Evolution, Ecology, and Biodiversity undergraduate at UC Davis. She came to Davis from South Carolina to follow her passion for nature and science and to pursue a career in research.
