Join historian Peter J. Emanuel, Jr., on May 7 at 1:30 p.m. as he tells the story of the whaleship Stonington and discusses his new book Course Change: The Whaleship STONINGTON in the Mexican-American War.
The Stonington, a whaleship from New London, Connecticut, was sailing home after more than three years at sea. When it pulled into San Diego, California, in September 1846 the crew learned that war had broken out between the US and Mexico. The town was under siege, leaving the US inhabitants no escape route but the sea. In response, the Stonington’s captain allowed them to take refuge aboard his ship. Thus began the first step in the Stonington’s months-long tour of duty as a member of the US Navy’s Pacific Squadron.
Using the Stonington's logbook and other sources, historian Peter J. Emanuel, Jr., tells this story unlike any other in the annals of whaling. This program is free for Members and included in admission for non-members. Registration is required.
