Counter Strategy for a Huddersfield Arts Centre

The event will present an imagined alternative for the Piazza buildings by architects Office Heft (Marsden) and Studio Reiver (Newcastle) as a method to talk about how and why we make civic choices in Huddersfield, and how we can make different ones in the future.

In recent years creative activity has flourished in former retail units of the Piazza in Huddersfield with more than 200 organisations and events making use of the empty shops from 2019 to January 2024 alone.

Notable organisations included ame, a venue for international sound art and experimental music, and Dark Horse, a performing arts company for people with learning disabilities.

This activity contributed a conservatively estimated £400,000 of value to the town annually.

The imminent demolition of the site marks the closure of a unique artist-led centre for creativity in the town centre.
