About this Event

PopUp Theatre (PUT) is proud to present its newest theatrical production, “Corpus Christi.” A groundbreaking exploration of faith, love and LGBTQ+ issues, by American playwright Terrance McNally. Often referred to as the “gay Jesus play” PopUp will bring a new POV to this two+ decades old play. Met with critical acclaim and protest in 1999, Artistic Director, Christopher Huelshorst believes that this is the right time and the right place to revive this ancient story meets contemporary theater. PopUp brings immersive, interactive environments to the stories it tells, and Corpus Christi will be no different, allowing audiences to feel as if they are truly a part of the play. Set in a Corpus Christi, Texas, 1950’s though the 1980’s, the play follows Joshua (Jesus) and his disciples from the nativity to the fateful crucifixion.

Terrance McNally's 'Corpus Christi’ was first performed in New York City in 1998, the play is largely based on the Gospel of John, but with a modern twist. It tells the story of Jesus and his disciples, Judas, Peter and all, as they meet in Corpus Christi, Texas. There, Joshua and his followers are met with hostility and prejudice for their homosexuality, The play tackles the topics of gay marriage, social violence, and AIDS/HIV. In 1998 it was met with both praise and criticism from various religious groups. Some groups argued that the play was blasphemous, while others argued that the play was a powerful exploration of faith and love. In memoriam, McNally was lost to COVID-19 in 2020.
