Coronation and Celebration

Handel’s Coronation Anthems · Alec Roth’s A Time to Dance
Saturday 12 December 2026 · 7.00pm
O2 Guildhall Southampton
What does it mean to celebrate together?
From the splendour of a royal coronation to the rhythms of everyday life, this concert brings together music that explores how we mark the moments that matter.
Handel’s Coronation Anthems, written for the coronation of George II in 1727, include the much-loved Zadok the Priest — music designed for ceremony, spectacle and a shared public occasion.
Alec Roth’s A Time to Dance turns to celebration on a more human scale. Inspired by the changing seasons and the rhythms of a lifetime, it moves through Spring Morning, Summer Noon, Autumn Evening and Winter Night, bringing together poetry, changing musical textures and the invitation to work, rest, mourn, rejoice — and dance.
Together, these two works offer two very different visions of celebration: the public ceremony and the personal experience, the grand occasion and the moments we share with one another.
