Christ Church Detroit | Detroit, MI
About this Event
Before the asphalt artery of I-375 paved over large sections of the near east side, the people who walked these paths felt the vital human heartbeat of Black Bottom and Hastings Street. Before that, there were the ribbon farms of the French, who gave Detroit its name. Before that, there was the deep spiritual connection of the Anishinaabe people to hills and rivers that none of us can see today. And before that… mastodons, mammoths, and miles and miles of ice.
Join us for this WORLD PREMIERE CONCERT EVENT!
Envision the stories, art and culture that shaped our small piece of the world over the past three million years. Examine the core sample that reminds us that Detroit is always, endlessly building on its past — and becoming its future.
Colloborators include Blue Note artist Dave McMurray, storyteller Marsha Music, musician Alice Sun and photographer Michelle Andonian.
This world premiere event is a benefit concert to support the Outreach Fund and specifically the feeding ministry of Christ Church Detroit. This program has grown over the past months and now feeds 60-70 people every Sunday afternoon. Ticket sales from this event will allow them to continue to expand this much-needed service for those facing food insecurity and homelessness in this neighborhood.
About CORE375:
In 2018, artist Michelle Andonian was awarded a grant from the Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge Detroit. The proposal was to create a multi-disciplinary “core sample” of Detroit’s extraordinary history by collaborating with local artists and experts. The end result includes original music by Dave McMurray and Alice Sun, with Jeff Canady, Isis Damil, Allen Dennard, Djallo Djakate, Larry Fratangelo, Pathe Jessi, Ibrahim Jones, Maurice O’Neil, Luis Resto, Meg Rohrer, and Cecelia Sha. Sound Engineering by Salar Ansari. Narration by Marsha Music, with Phillip Brown, David Lowrie, and Rosebud Bear Schneider.

About Christ Church Detroit: The oldest Protestant church in the city of Detroit has stood at what is now the intersection of Jefferson and 375 for 179 years, serving generations of this community. The feeding ministry began in in October 2023, with a monthly bagged lunch. Initially, only a handful were served, but this program now serves 60-70 people every week, and is one of the only opportunities for a free meal on Sundays. The Outreach Committee hopes to expand to hot meals in the future, and your ticket purchase will help fund that goal.
A number of Detroit’s founding families established this church. Today, we are a contemporary, open and affirming, multi-racial, multi-ethnic congregation, enlivened by the Holy Spirit to serve Christ in the world around us. Some of us were born into the Episcopal Church, some were received into it as adults, and some of us are just discovering or exploring it now. We are straight and LGBTQIA+, single, married, divorced, and remarried, with and without children. We are a neighborhood church for city residents, and also a destination congregation for those from surrounding areas or across the Canadian border. We are all here because prayer and worship strengthen us in our daily lives, and because we have found community, acceptance, mission, and love.
