Afro-Peruvian music and dance constitute a rich cultural expression originating on the coast of Peru—the product of a cultural fusion between traditions brought by enslaved Africans, indigenous music, and Spanish music. It is characterized by the vibrant use of percussion instruments, with the Peruvian *cajón* being the most emblematic.**Main Genres and Dances****Festejo:** This is the most joyful and representative rhythm. It is danced using pelvic movements, great agility, and strength, often performed in competitions or *zapateo* (footwork) challenges.
**Landó:** Featuring a slower, sensual, and undulating rhythm, this style possesses a deep African heritage and is distinguished by free-flowing hip movements and a more pronounced melodic foundation.**Zapateo:** A rhythmic competition in which dancers challenge the *cajón* player or guitarist by striking their shoes against the floor.
**Alcatraz:** A courtship dance in which a couple holds a lit candle and attempts to ignite a piece of cloth or paper—known as the *alcatraz*—that their partner wears tied to the back of their waist, using rapid hip movements.**Toro Mata:** A profound lament transformed into a dance, reflecting the harsh conditions faced by agricultural laborers during the colonial era.**Son de los Diablos:** A dance performed by carnival troupes that depicts dancing demons, blending intense percussion, *zapateo*, and acrobatics.**Key Instruments:** The Afro-Peruvian sound revolves around percussion. The primary instrument is the *cajón*—a wooden box upon which the musician sits while playing. Other fundamental instruments include the *quijada de burro* (donkey jawbone, used as a scraper), the *cajita* (a small box drum), and the acoustic guitar.
Coraza Negra is an outstanding music ensemble and cultural project dedicated to preserving and promoting Afro-Peruvian music, dance, and cultural heritage across Europe. Led by promoter, musician, and contemporary dance choreographer Jorge Acevedo, the band undertakes international tours (including a European tour) and supports charitable causes linked to educational projects in Peru.
