Begin your preparation phase for the 12-week build to the Las Vegas Masters Boxing Tournament in February 2026.

Info: We review today's program, answer your questions and prepare for the morning's learning activities.

Technical Session / Strength and Conditioning Session
Info: We split the group in half. USAB Certified coach, Jesus Cerdad leads the technical session. The focus of the session is on learning techniques for Olympic style boxing competition. Jesus is Chicago based from Chicago Boxing and Fitness located in Evanston, IL. He coaches male and female boxers including masters. No hard sparring. All USA Boxing safety protocols will be observed. Faculty from the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition lead the strength and conditioning session. This hands-on sessions aims to show how to optimize strength and explosive training with 3-5 hours per week available for all boxing training.

Strategy and Tactics for Winning Olympic Style Boxing
Info: Get the inside scoop on how Olympic boxing matches are scored, what the judges look for and how to integrate this knowledge into your preparations. The session is facilitated by workshop staff and coaches.

Lunch and Sports Nutrition
Info: What better way than to learn about how sports nutrition and hydration can help build fitness, and make weight than during lunch! Faculty from the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition provide tips and strategies to nourish the body for training and replenish energy after competition.

Mental Skills Training and Boxing
Info: This hands on session introduces masters boxers to valuable mental skills to increase confidence, control and composure and how to integrate them into their training programs. Dr. John Coumbe-Lilley leads this session. He brings experience as a masters boxer in addition to sports psychology consulting at two Olympic Games, three world championships and a Pan American Games. He's going to show how to box and apply mental skills to enhance your boxing training and enjoy competition.

The Road to Las Vegas: Putting It All Together
Info: All the elements covered in the day's learning sessions are pulled together to show a cohesive, integrated novice masters boxing preparation program. This sessions shows a 12-week program to guide preparation to box in Las Vegas in February 2026. This sessions is led by faculty from the Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition.

Morning techniques, tactics and strength and conditioning
Info: This session splits the group to increase individual attention and feedback. USA Boxing-certified coach, Jesus Cerdad, will lead safe hands-on technical sessions for each group, assisted by select coaches. Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition faculty will lead the strength and conditioning session and demonstrate 5 x 5 strength training methodology for efficient and productive integrated training. The emphasis of these sessions is on learning and development. There will be no hard sparring in this session or any other session. Expect up to max 60% intensity. All USA Boxing safety requirements will be in place. Participants are expected to adhere to safety requirements at all times.

Lunch and sports nutrition
Info: What better way to recover and restore energy during lunchtime than replenishing energy stores and learning tips and strategies for masters boxers to use nutrition and hydration to enhance masters boxing training for competition. Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition faculty will lead the sports nutrition session.

Mental Skills Training
Info: An afternoon of innovative hands-on training, learning how to implement sports psychology and integrate it into your master's boxing training program. Led by Dr. John Coumbe-Lilley, who has experience as a sports psychology consultant at two Olympic Games, three World Championships, one Pan AM Games, and a master's boxing victory at the Las Vegas Masters Boxing Tournament 2025.

Programming for Las Vegas: Putting it all together
Info: The final session of the day provides a pathway from phase one preparation to preparing to compete. Dr. John Coumbe-Lilley will show how to integrate what was learned during the day into a master's boxing program so that athletes can arrive ready, excited, and motivated to box their best. Highlights describing the December event will be shared at the end of the session.
