About the Speakers
Dr Mark Chan is an Assistant Professor at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) where he combines his hands-on experience as a physiotherapist with his academic knowledge. He trained at King's College London and earned a master's degree in health psychology from City, University of London. Later, he completed his PhD at NTU, where he studied how our thoughts and feelings can impact low back pain. Before joining SIT, Mark worked at Alexandra Hospital and Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. These experiences gave him valuable insights into how real-world physiotherapy works, especially for people dealing with musculoskeletal issues like low back pain.
At SIT, Mark teaches the next generation of physiotherapists, focusing on the basics of physiotherapy, how to treat musculoskeletal problems, and promoting health in communities. His goal is to connect what happens in the classroom with what happens in clinics, ultimately helping to improve the health and well-being of the community.
Lian Guojie is a physiotherapist from Woodlands Health and leads the outpatient musculoskeletal team and also practises in the Emergency Department. He attained a Master of Clinical Physiotherapy from Curtain University in 2012. Over his 16 years career as a physiotherapist in the public and private sectors, he has gained valuable experience treating patients ranging from simple to disabling back pain due to orthopaedic, autoimmune or chronic pain conditions.
Guojie is also heavily involved in training physiotherapists in the community, developing a musculoskeletal physiotherapy module on patient-centred care. As a member of both local and international pain associations, Guojie keeps abreast with the latest research in Psychologically-informed Physiotherapy and Cognitive Functional Therapy.
Additionally, he has contributed insightful articles on Chronic Low Back Pain and Exercise trends to Straits Times' Mind Your Body. Actively engaged in the HealthierSG initiative, he prioritises patient empowerment and coaching towards healthier lifestyles for the holistic management of low back pain.
