This is a two day workshop on
September 19th 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM
AND
September 20th 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM
All paper comes from plants, but some sources are more sustainable than others. In this two day workshop with Master Papermaker Andrea Peterson, we will focus on the process of making handmade natural fiber paper from beginning to end, starting with the plant. This class will give you focused and practical hands-on experience on how to take a fiber from your backyard and turn it into a usable handmade paper.
To expedite the process for a 2-day workshop, plant fibers are collected and dried. A few of the plant fibers used in this workshop will be harvested locally from the Erie area specifically for this class. Participants will learn about identifying, collecting, and preparing plant materials for papermaking, including the differences between working with fresh and dried fibers.
We will explore the entire fiber preparation process, from precooking and selecting energy sources for cooking to understanding various caustics and their role in breaking down plant material. The class will also cover beating methods, sheet formation, and a range of pressing and drying techniques, providing a comprehensive introduction to making paper from locally sourced plants. Together, we'll investigate multiple sustainable approaches to each process and learn how these methods can be tailored to the materials and resources available wherever you call home.
The fibers we will focus on are:
Hay
Okra
Onion Tops
Ginger Leaves
Johnson Grass
Garlic Mustard

"I invite the place that I live to encompass me, wholeheartedly. It is a workplace for my development as an artist and critical thinker of the world we live in, especially the place we all call home. The environment and its workings are ever present in my work. I look at the world around me symbolically and present it as such in the work that I create. I observe connections between the plant, animal and human world that present concerns, desires and realities for many of us to consider or experience. My work is influenced greatly by use of paper fiber and pigments. The works included are images made with paper pulp, prints with or without images made with paper pulp, and pencil or ink drawings."
