Ocean Saxophone Quartet presents their first 2024 concert titled “Conversations” alongside pianists Wendy (Xingyu) Chen and Ronan Apcar. The central work Conversations at a Yum Cha Restaurant composed and arranged by Jordon He for saxophone quartet and piano captures the Asian-Australian experience core to the identity of Ocean through nostalgic Chinese melodies and satirical dialogue. In combination with Toshio Mashima’s Cafe St Germain, Ocean sets the scene: a group of friends grabbing a meal together, talking about and sharing the music they have been playing. In this vein, this concert will also feature solo performances by each of Ocean’s members. Along with Wendy (Xingyu) Chen, Jason Ji will be performing Wanghua Chu’s Concerto, and Qi (Iris) Li will be performing Fazil Say’s Suite for Saxophone. Additionally, along with Ronan Apcar, Justinn Lu will be performing Henri Tomasi’s Ballade, and Jenny (Chen-Yu) Yang will be performing Robert Bariller’s Rapsodie Bretonne.
