Join us in the library or online for a conversation with Donald L. Miller, author of Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany. This deeply personal story of the American bomber boys in World War II who brought the war to Hitler’s doorstep was the inspiration for the major Apple TV+ series, produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, that premiered January 26, 2024. Don will be in conversation with Paul Sparrow, former director of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.
The riveting history of the American Eighth Air Force in World War II and the young men who flew the bombers that helped beat the Nazis and liberate Europe is brilliantly told by Miller, a historian and World War II expert. With the narrative power of fiction, Masters of the Air takes you on a harrowing ride through the fire-filled skies over Berlin, Hanover, and Dresden, describing the terrible cost of bombing for the German people. This book is a story of life in wartime England and in the German prison camps, where tens of thousands of airmen spent part of the war. Drawn from recent interviews, oral histories, and American, British, German, and other archives, Masters of the Air is an authoritative, deeply moving account of the world’s first and only bomber war.
Donald L. Miller is the John Henry MacCracken Professor of History Emeritus at Lafayette College and author of ten books, including Vicksburg. He has hosted, coproduced, or served as historical consultant for more than thirty television documentaries and has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, and other publications.
Paul M. Sparrow is a writer, historical consultant, and the former Director of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum. Before moving to the FDR Library he was the Deputy Director and Senior Vice President at the Newseum in Washington, DC. He is also an Emmy Award-winning documentary and television producer for Discovery, TLC, Fox, and PBS. He is the author of the upcoming book, Awakening the Spirit of America: FDR's War of Words With Charles Lindbergh—and the Battle to Save Democracy.
