OVERVIEW & PURPOSE:
Skill Level: Intermediate – for students who already feel comfortable with the basics of wheel throwing.
This class is for anyone looking to enhance their wheel throwing skills and learn some new tricks! Students will go beyond the basics to improve control, and refine forms to create larger, more consistent pots. Students will walk away with the confidence to create stronger, more intentional forms. Instructor Adam Haney will tailor his guidance to accommodate for varying skill levels.
MAIN TOPICS COVERED:
• Technique and Timing
• Achieving a consistent weight and form
•Controlling larger amounts of clay
• Pouring vessels (spouts and handles)
MATERIALS NEEDED:
1. Basic throwing tools will be provided as well as a hand towel.
2. Students are encouraged to bring an apron if they are concerned with a mess. We do not provide aprons.
ACTIVITY:
1. WEEK 1: Throwing cylinders with control and consistency
I. students will practice throwing 1.5lb cylinders with an even wall thickness of ¼” or less.
2. WEEK 2 & 3: Throwing consistent forms with 3-5lbs
I. students will apply the skills learned from week 1 towards throwing consistent forms from 3-5lbs of clay
4. WEEK 4: Vessels for pouring and drinking
I. Students will learn to add handles and spouts to create a pitcher and mug
***The pots will not be glazed in class. Non-members will choose a glaze color for the instructor to apply.
Instructor Bio:
Adam earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi and has been working with clay since 2012. He’s the co-owner of A&N Ceramics, a local business focused on creating functional pottery and teaching workshops. Adam’s laid-back teaching style fosters a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere where the goal is to unwind, get creative, and take a break from the hustle of daily life. You’ll learn a lot, have fun, and probably make a few new friends along the way.
