Contraptions don’t sit neatly in any genre box. One night you’ll find them crashing a metal bill, the next tearing through a ska-punk lineup — saxophones wailing over brutal riffs that shift from mathy precision to skanking nonsense. Formed in Sheffield in 2020, the band channel the grit and humour of their hometown whilst pulling influences from Mr Bungle, Periphery, Frank Zappa, Thank You Scientist, Fishbone, and Dream Theater, with flashes of John Zorn and Reel Big Fish creeping in at the edges.
The result is a sound that’s heavy, playful, and unapologetically unpredictable. With a string of singles already released, Contraptions are currently in the studio crafting their next EP.
