CONTACT IMPROVISATION Intensive
June 28-30, 2024
Durham, NC
Facilitated by IRENE SPOSETTI

*** ABOUT THE INTENSIVE “Somatic Improvisation” ***
I invite you to join me for a time dedicated to studying and practicing contact improvisation, exploring the concept of “somatic improvisation” – an art form of physical expression and shared embodied processes that manifest as dance dialogues and instantaneous compositions.
How might we express creatively and collaborate safely in an improvised dance, without apprehensions or limiting expectations that may arise, particularly in interactions with others?
I am deeply passionate about discovering ways to ground oneself in states of presence, availability and heightened somatic receptivity as the foundation for decision-making while improvising. Throughout our time together, we’ll engage in individual, partner and group improvisations to activate and articulate our attention, integrating our physical-sensorial awareness with movement skills. Furthermore, we’ll explore creative play and somatic imagination as wellsprings of expressiveness and composition, experimenting with sensory words, tactile images, and poetic elements emerging from our dances.

*** TECHNICAL THEMES ***
Our practice will center on understanding weight and its organization in the body in motion, as a key element for achieving fluidity and confidence moving on the floor, seamlessly transitioning between levels, inverted positions and combining movements in contact with others.
We’ll concentrate on exploring technical tools for aerial suspensions, off-ground balancing, and playing with momentum and the trajectories of weight in motion. We will aim to access the simultaneous presence of stability and mobility, definition, and availability in our movements, as we intertwine our bodies in motion, releasing, rising and gliding within the breath of gravity.
- Biomechanics of movement related to the gravitational force
- Centre-Axis fluid alignment and weight distribution and modulation of body tones
- Kinaesthetics of physical forces within and around our bodies, their elemental nature and qualities
- Core balancing and structural alignment in duet
- Aerial suspensions
- Trajectories of weight and space

*** INTENTIONS ***
- Explore the principles that underlie movement and our relationship with gravity starting from a somatic and creative approach
- Access more conscious, efficient and ways of moving, increasing confidence and ease, expressing oneself and relating to others with one’s own body and movement
- Explore the creative, expressive and relational potential of the dynamic and somatic dialogues of Contact Improvisation

*** WHO IS THIS FOR? ***
This invitation is open to movers who are actively engaged in the study of the dance form of contact improvisation, and who already have a foundation in its principles and techniques. A container will be created where all attendees will learn together, nourishing each other in the process while receiving specific tools and attention according to their needs.
