Optical Alignment är en konstellation av två performance, en filmvisning med en performativ föreläsning och ett konstnärssamtal som sträcker sig över tre kvällar på MDT och Moderna Museet. Ett performance av Paul Maheke, Nkisi och Ariel Efraim Ashbel samt ett performance av Natália Rebelo kommer äga rum på MDT. Det ena performancet följs av ett samtal med konstnärerna i samarbete med den diskursiva plattformen Spaces of Care, Disobedience and Desire. En filmvisning och en performativ föreläsning av Ali Cherri, samt ett efterföljande samtal med konstnären, kommer äga rum på Moderna Museet inom programmet för deras Filmklubb.

“Optical alignment” är en mekanisk teknik som gör det möjligt att korrigera ett bristande optiskt system genom att upprätta en ny siktlinje. Det optiska system, eller möjligen, blicken som vi alla lever under, är en väsentlig del i alla maktsystem vilket speglas i en ointegrerad relation mellan jaget, kroppen och den sociala världen. Som den intersektionella feministiska skribenten bell hooks skriver, “By courageously looking, we defiantly declared: ‘Not only will I stare. I want my look to change reality.’ Even in, the worse circumstances of domination, the ability to manipulate one’s gaze in the face of structures of domination that would contain it, opens up the possibility of agency.” Det mänskliga ögat som ett optiskt 1 system kan därmed också vara en plats för motstånd och agens för de marginaliserade och förtryckta.
Att etablera ögonkontakt i de presenterade verken erkänner publikens närvaro och gör dem medvetna om sin egen roll som åskådare i performanceapparaten. Det fungerar på så vis som en förskjutning i maktdynamiken mellan konstnär och publik. På olika sätt försöker verken etablera en ny siktlinje, ett nytt anpassat ramverk som ifrågasätter mekanismerna för särskiljande privilegiering av dominerande kunskapssystem och synlighetsregimer inom performance, bildkonst och samhället i stort.

Constellation no.1: Optical Alignment är det första evenemanget Constellation serien, curerad av Ulrika Flink och Rado Ištok. Serien ämnar att föra samman bild- och dans/koreografikonstnärer för att lyfta frågor om synlighet och agens på ett intersektionellt sätt. Med stöd från Stockholms stad. Alla evenemang sker i samarbete med MDT, Moderna Museet och Spaces of Care, Disobedience and Desire. Tactics of Minority Space-Making ett forskningsprojekt som stöds av Kungliga Konsthögskolans program för konstnärlig forskning och utveckling.

Optical Alignment is a constellation of two performances, a screening with a performative lecture, and artist conversations unfolding over three evenings. A performance by Paul Maheke, Nkisi and Ariel Efraim Ashbel, and a performance by Natália Rebelo will take place at MDT, followed on one of the evenings by a conversation with the artists in collaboration with the discursive platform Spaces of Care, Disobedience and Desire. A screening and a lecture performance by Ali Cherri, followed by a conversation with the artist, will take place at Moderna Museet within the programme of the Film Club. Optical alignment is a mechanical technique which enables a failing optical system to be corrected by establishing a new reference line of sight. The optical system, or, if you will, the gaze that we all live under, is integral to all systems of power, mirrored in an unaligned relationship between the self, the body and the social world. As stated by the intersectional feminist writer and activist bell hooks, “By courageously looking, we defiantly declared: ‘Not only will I stare. I want my look to change reality.’ Even in, the worse circumstances of domination, the ability to manipulate one’s gaze in the face of structures of domination that would contain it, opens up the possibility of agency.” The human eye as an optical system can thus also be a site for resistance and agency of the marginalised and the oppressed. Establishing an eye contact in the presented works acknowledges the presence of the audience and makes them aware of their own role as spectators in the performance apparatus. It thus operates a shift in the power dynamic between the performers and the audience. In different ways, the works are trying to establish a new reference line of sight, a new aligned framework that questions the mechanisms of differential privileging of dominant knowledge systems and regimes of visibility within performance, visual arts, and society at large.
