This talk explores the relationship between conspiracy belief and spirituality, otherwise known as conspirituality. Surprisingly, spirituality may play a role in endorsing conspiracy theories, particularly among those embracing alternative medicine or New Age practices. While spirituality is traditionally viewed positively, recent research challenges this notion, showing that some aspects of spirituality can encourage detrimental behaviours, such as anti-vaccine sentiment. Malcolm will talk about his research into different types of belief and examine his research into conspirituality.Malcolm Schofield is a Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Derby and the module leader for Parapsychology, Human Behaviour and Evolution, and Independent Studies in Psychology. Additionally, He's the lead of the B:ICEP (Belief Identity, Cognition, Experience, and Personality) research group. His research interests span paranormal, religious, and conspiracy beliefs and their relationship to personality and cognition. He is interested in music psychology and supervises many PhD, Masters and Undergraduate projects. He has previously edited the Journal of the Society for Psychological Research, sits on the Society for Psychical Research council, and is a member of their Spontaneous Cases Committee. He has been featured on the BBC documentary ‘Paranormal: The Girl, the Ghost and the Gravestone’, and has been in the Times Higher Education, Independent, Daily Mirror and the Daily Star.
