Conservation Conversations: On The East Side Soil Project
Buffalo, NY remains one of the country's most segregated cities, with more than 80% of the area's Black population residing on the East Side, where the consequences of redlining, urban renewal, and long-term public and private disinvestment are manifest in the health, education, and economic indicators of area residents.
The East Side Soil Project (ESSP) was the first large-scale study of lead soil contamination in this community, the results of which have helped raise awareness of the widespread risk of exposure to residents.
