Cost: Free Paintings in our Chinese galleries are mounted in a variety of formats, including scrolls, albums, fans, and more. Mounting is a traditional method of preservation and display that our conservators perform here at the National Museum of Asian Art.
Catch a rare glimpse of our experts modeling the first step of the mounting process: lining a painting with paper. Chinese painting conservator Xiangmei Gu and Mellon Chinese Painting Conservation Fellow Yingyi Wang will demonstrate two traditional ways of lining: shi tuo and fu tuo. At this cart talk, you'll learn about the difference between these methods and about the tools and materials they use.
