About this Event

Consensus Head Acceleration Measurement Practices (CHAMP) Conference ~ March 24 – 25, 2022

You are invited to participate in the Consensus Head Acceleration Measurement Practices (CHAMP) Conference occurring March 24 – 25, 2022 at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Roberts Center for Pediatric Research (tentative schedule below). The goal of CHAMP is to develop consensus best practices for the gathering, reporting, and analysis of head acceleration data in sports. Given the rapid expansion of commercial head impact sensor systems in sports and the proliferation of studies based on them in the literature, there is a growing need for the field to define best practices for their use.

  • The CHAMP effort consists of groups addressing the following areas:
  • Laboratory validation of wearable sensor systems
  • On-field validation of wearable sensor systems
  • Video analysis of head impacts
  • Physical (dummy) reconstructions of head impacts
  • Computational modeling of head impacts
  • Study design and statistical analysis
  • Transparency and disclosure

Each group will produce a draft of a short, bulleted list of best practices and a full journal-length paper that will be released ahead of the consensus conference. We invite all invited participants to provide comments on the drafts before the conference and to attend the conference in March. During the conference, we will ask participants to engage in discussion on each of the above topics. At the end of the discussion, a vote will be taken to determine consensus on each of the best practices in the bulleted lists. After discussion and potential revision of each section during the conference, the full papers will be submitted to the Annals of Biomedical Engineering to be peer-reviewed for a special edition of the journal.

We take health concerns very seriously. COVID-related precautions will be in place to make the in-person event as safe as possible. Attendees must present proof of completed COVID-19 vaccination to attend in person and masks will be required to be worn. These policies may change as relevant recommendations change. Instructions on how to upload your vaccination card(s) are presented below.
