Connecting, Communicating, and Caring: Dementia Support Strategies

Join CASHA in person on Tuesday, September 15th, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Hall, Teresian House, 200 Washington Ave. Ext., Albany, presented by Kathryn K. Hawver, M.A., CCC-SLP.
Offered for 0.2 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate level, Professional area).
This session explores the SLP’s evolving role in supporting people living with dementia (PLWD), highlighting person-centered, evidence-based communication strategies and the resources and programs the Teresian House uses to foster meaningful engagement.
Attendees will experience a Dementia Live Simulation, offering firsthand insight into the sensory and cognitive challenges faced by PLWD, followed by a tour of the Memory Care Unit. The evening closes with Q&A and a materials display.
Learning Outcomes: Attendees will be able to:
• Explain the role of an SLP providing services for PLWD
• Describe person-centered communication approaches for PLWD
• Identify effective resources used by the Teresian House for enhancing meaningful engagement for PLWD
