The Land Heritage Coalition of Glastonbury, Inc. (LHC) is pleased to be participating in the Connecticut Forest and Park Association’s (CFPA) annual “Connecticut Trails Day” weekend, June 1-2, 2024. LHC President, Michael Corcoran and Christine Penney will serve as co-leaders for a hike from Birch Mountain Road, Sunday, June 2nd at 10:00am. The hike will follow the “Gay City Connector Trail” from Birch Mountain Road to Gay City State Park (approximately 3.5 miles round trip) and visit the ruins of the 18th century mill town that has slowly been reclaimed by the forest.
The trail passes through a picturesque example of New England mixed hardwood forest, along wetlands, offering frequent reminders of Connecticut’s agrarian past. The stone fences, cellar holes, and old charcoal sites that dot the trail, mixed with a little imagination, offer a picture of what Connecticut looked like more than 200 years ago.
“Beyond the history,” explains Michael Corcoran, “these conservation parcels play host to an impressive diversity of Connecticut’s flora and fauna. By early June, the forest is bustling, many of our native plants are in bloom and the air is filled with birdsong.”
As the state affiliate for the American Hiking Society, CFPA was an early adopter of the National Trails Day program. With over 175 free events, Connecticut has been elevated to the national stage by hosting more events than any other state. Now, Connecticut Trails Day has expanded into a two-day celebration at many locations throughout our state. Join us the first weekend in June to celebrate trails and the outdoors by promoting recreational activities to protect our trails for future generations.
The event is free and open to the public, however, registration is required. Hiker’s physical condition and the weather conditions should be taken into consideration by participants. Appropriate footwear is a must, water and insect protection are recommended. Further details about the two-day event are found at trailsday.org.
