Congressional Candidate Debate
About this Event
Bookshop West Portal is hosting a debate between the two candidates running for Congressional Representative of CA’s 11th District, Supervisor Connie Chan and Senator Scott Weiner. This seat, previously occupied by now-retired Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, represents the city of San Francisco.
The bookshop has a tradition of hosting political candidates for Q&A’s during election cycles as a service to our community, to uphold civic discourse and ensure our community is politically informed. In that spirit, this event is FREE and open to the public.
San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan and State Senator Scott Weiner will debate at 6pm on Saturday, October 10th.
Our aim is for you to walk away with a better understanding of each candidate’s positions and policies as such, this event will be moderated by James Kass and will not include an audience Q&A portion. James Kass is the Executive Director of KALW Public Media, the Bay Area’s independent public media organization. A longtime cultural strategist and civic storyteller, he is the founder of Youth Speaks and the international Brave New Voices network. His work has focused on the intersection of media, culture, young people, and civic life.
A FREE RSVP is required, and we will be checking confirmations at the door. This will sell out quickly. Seating is first come, first served, and we anticipate standing room only, so please take commute time and parking difficulty into account.
You, as an audience member, are encouraged to write down ONE question (on a notecard that will be provided upon your arrival) to be considered by the moderator. Your questions will be read by the moderator to the candidate, who will then address your concerns. All questions will be anonymous, and we will not be taking verbal questions from the audience. If you wish to submit ONE question in advance to be considered as a debate topic/question, please do so through this . We respectfully ask that you keep any questions to their responsibilities as a national representative, as local issues are the responsibility of our district supervisors and city council.
**KALW is a public add free radio that has been in the Bay Area for 85 years. They will be recording this event and posting it on their channel. It will not be live, but by coming to this event you are consenting to being audio (not visually) recorded.
