In celebration of our Patronal Feast on January 26th, we are pleased to offer a unique "come and sing" Evensong and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. All are invited to show up ready to sing by 3pm for rehearsal in advance of the 4pm service. We’ll offer some of the greatest hits of evensong, including Charles Villiers Stanford canticles in C and Henry Balfour Gardiner’s “Evening Hymn.”
St. Paul's is one of the rare Episcopal parishes in the country to offer this liturgical combination regularly - on 2nd and 4th Sundays, October through mid-June, along with each Sunday of the Penitential seasons. It represents a rich celebration of choral music and timeless ceremony. Particularly on this day, we hope you’ll join us - not only in witness and worship, but in the creation thereof!
A reception will follow in the Atrium.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Evensong is sung Evening Prayer and features canticles and psalms appointed for the evening and sung by the choir on the congregation’s behalf. The scripture is adorned by hymns and anthems.
Benediction, akin to eucharistic adoration, is a brief ritual appended to Evensong in which hymns and prayers are sung as Christ’s Body is exposed at the High Altar and blesses the people, all kneeling.
Please feel free to reach out to Director of Music Monica Berney ([email protected]) with any questions regarding your participation. All are welcome; we hope to have you with us by 3pm.
