Power soul/R&B/funk outfit Congregation comes from the fertile D.C. funk, jazz and go-go scene and initially formed in 1997. Established by songwriter and guitarist David Boris in the model of a modern-day Sly and the Family Stone, the formidable, multi-racial group also features drummer Tony Bryant, singers Jenee Bevett and Aaron Hall, saxophonists Frank Mitchell (also of Thievery Corporation) and Matt Simms, bassist Eric Leifert and keyboardist Cameron Krug. They released their debut full-length album in 1999 on Boris' AlphaDog label, entitled “Urban Philosophy”, and was hailed by the Washington Post as “an advanced class in vintage soul, funk and jazz”.
The band grew its extensive following with intense and high-energy live shows up and down the East Coast, earning praise in the New Yorker, Village Voice, Time Out NY, and opening for esteemed groups ranging from the Jamiroquai and Third Eye Blind to Gap Band and Isley Brothers, as well as Len, Eagle Eye Cherry, the Funky Meters, Tom Tom Club and many others. Commenting on social issues and interpersonal relationships with a flavor of positivity and racial togetherness, Congregation was listed as the 2003 Washington Post Concert of the Year, sharing the stage on that show with De La Soul, Robert Randolph, and Everclear. The band also issued the EP “Raw and Pure” in 2003, also on AlphaDog.
At the same time, multiple members of the group were also starting families, and Congregation dissolved in 2004. After a decade of everyone going their separate ways, Boris rang the bell, called the family back together, and Congregation re-formed in 2019 to record two new songs and a re-release of Million Days of Your Life from “Urban Philosophy”. These songs reflect the current national environment as well as the maturation the band members have undergone during their time apart with new music and renewed energy.

Cheaper than Therapy is one of DC's leading 80's/90's cover bands, and you've probably already seen them at any of the last five Tastes of DC and the last three H Street Festivals. Therapy brings high energy performance, musicianship and their own interpretation of quality hits from Police, Blondie, Prince, David Bowie, Pink, Elvis Costello, INXS, The Pretenders, Talking Heads - yeah, all the cool stuff. You might get hits from English Beat, The Plimsouls and Icicle Works, or you might get some Queen, Tom Petty and Stones. Because every set is different, culled from their vast library of covers, every show is unique. And fun. Promise.
