Confluence, brings together the art of Moana Lee and Greg Yee, who both explore the Pūharakekenui Styx River as a vibrant meeting point of diverse currents – ecological, cultural, and spiritual. Through their individual responses to the spring-fed Pūharakekenui catchment and its human and more-than human inhabitants, the artists invite us to reflect on the interconnectedness that defines our relationship with the natural world and with each other.
Moana Lee uses natural photography to explore relationships between people and water, creating phytograms of river plants developed using the river’s fresh and salt waters. Greg Yee uses earth, clay, and water gathered from the river to imbue its essence into the glazes of his domestic ware and ‘floating islands’ of biodiversity.
Lee and Yee’s work in this exhibition is a direct outcome of their participation in the Pūharakekenui Styx Living Laboratory Trust Creative Communicators Programme. This annual residency invites three artists to spend 12 weeks exploring the Pūharakekenui Styx River catchment, interpreting freshwater values through art.
