Winchester Cathedral was itself born out of conflict between the Normans and the Anglo Saxons that took place 1,000 years ago and culminated in the battle of Hastings. Throughout its long history the cathedral bears the marks and memories of conflict through the ages including the Hundred Years' War, the War of the Roses, the English Civil War and the truly terrible world wars of the twentieth century. This private, 90 minute guided tour showcases one of the most comprehensive collections of military and war memorials in the country – each with its own story. This tour will take visitors up into the bell ringing chamber, the loft space above the nave, the main body of the cathedral and also into the crypt (closed, if flooded, although there is a viewing platform) to see the humblest and most moving war memorial.
Visitors should be aware that this tour involves a climb up 125 steps (very narrow at times) to reach the loft space above the nave and uneven floors and steps in the crypt. The tours lasts for around 90 minutes and may not be suitable for those who don't like confined spaces.
