The CISSP (Certified Information System Security Professional) exam evaluates candidates' expertise in information systems auditing, control, and assurance, and is structured as follows:
The CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) certification is indeed divided into 8 areas or domains within the Common Body of Knowledge (CBK). Here are those domains:
- Security and Risk Management
Covers foundational concepts such as risk management, security governance, and legal/regulatory issues.
- Asset Security
Focuses on protecting organizational assets, including data classification, handling, and ownership.
- Security Architecture and Engineering
Involves designing and managing secure architectures, systems, and engineering processes.
- Communication and Network Security
Addresses the design, protection, and management of secure communication channels and networks.
- Identity and Access Management (IAM)
Covers the processes and technologies for managing identities and access control mechanisms.
- Security Assessment and Testing
Involves strategies for assessing and testing security posture through audits, penetration tests, and other assessment methods.
- Security Operations
Focuses on maintaining and managing the security of an organization’s operations on a day-to-day basis.
- Software Development Security
Addresses the principles and practices involved in securing software development processes.
These eight domains represent the core areas of knowledge that CISSP-certified professionals are expected to master.
CISSP Experience Requirements
To qualify for the CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) certification, candidates must meet specific work experience criteria, which are outlined below:
- Five Years of Work Experience
Requirement: Candidates must have a minimum of five years of direct, full-time work experience in two or more of the ten domains of the (ISC)² CISSP Common Body of Knowledge (CBK).
- Experience Substitution Options
Option 1: Four years of direct, full-time work experience in two or more of the ten domains of the CISSP CBK, combined with either a four-year college degree or a credential from the (ISC)²-approved list.
Option 2: If you do not yet have the required experience, you can become an Associate of (ISC)² by passing the CISSP exam. You then have six years to accumulate the necessary experience to earn the full CISSP certification.
- Experience Exemptions
Education: A one-year exemption from the five-year work experience requirement is available for candidates with a four-year college degree.
Additional Credentials: A one-year waiver of the professional experience requirement is also granted for holding an additional credential from the (ISC)²-approved list.
- Valid Experience
Eligible Work: The experience must involve information systems security-related work performed as a practitioner, auditor, consultant, investigator, or instructor. It must require specific knowledge in Information Security and involve the direct application of that knowledge.
Full-Time Equivalence: The required five years of experience must be equivalent to actual full-time Information Security work. This experience is cumulative and can be accrued over a longer period, as long as it totals the equivalent of five years.
Meeting these requirements is essential for achieving the CISSP certification, which validates a professional's expertise in managing and implementing advanced security programs and policies.
