Concurso Sonámbulo: A Federico Garcia Lorca Tribute + Art Market & Open Mic
About this Event
In celebration of Pride month at Beyond Baroque, join us for a day-long festival of poetry, music, art, and community celebrating the legacy of Federico García Lorca! One of the most celebrated poets and an enduring queer literary icon, Lorca’s influence extends far beyond literature into flamenco, music, and the artistic traditions of Andalucía.
The afternoon will feature readings of Lorca’s poetry, prose, as well as orignal poems inspired by his work in the Wanda Coleman Theater; featuring Lois P. Jones, Elena Barcia, Valeryee Jimenez, Adrian Ibarra, Iván Salinas, and Duncan Cuervo, followed by live spanish guitar in partnership with La Sole Flamenco, an open mic to celebrate your favorite queer poets, and a mni art market featuring independent artists and craftmakers including Teaden, Hope Cerna, Faery Church, and more vendors to be announced!
If you'd like to be a vendor (prioritizing Queer/LGBTQIA+-identifying artists), there's a few spots left! Please send an email to [email protected]. before June 10th.
Inspired by Lorca’s love of culture and the meeting of worlds that shaped his work, Beyond Baroque gathers poets, musicians, artists, and local makers for an afternoon that honors not only Lorca’s poetry, but the vibrant cultures that define Los Angeles today.
The event draws inspiration from the historic Cante Jondo (“Deep Song”) Festival organized in Granada in 1922 by Lorca and composer Manuel de Falla, which preserve the folkloric traditions of Andalusian flamenco music. Much like that original gathering, this celebration embraces poetry, music, and community expression. Rather than a formal tribute for Lorca scholars alone, the festival invites everyone to come together in the spirit of creativity, cultural exchange, and artistic solidarity.
