Nirere Shanel, born in Kigali, discovered her musical calling at the age of 13, channelling her convictions into song. The profound impact of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda in 1998 inspired her to create her initial compositions, dedicated to honouring victims and providing solace to survivors. In 2009, she independently recorded her debut album, "Ndarota," translating to "I dream" in Kinyarwanda, catapulting her to recognition as a notable Rwandan singer. Her afro-folk compositions serve as cultural narratives, inviting listeners on a journey through the picturesque landscapes of her homeland, touching on themes of unity, reconciliation, and love.
Nirere Shanel's lyrical precision and distinctive voice resonate deeply with her audience, establishing her as an inspired and inspiring artist. Beyond her solo endeavors, she collaborates with esteemed artists like Nneka, Gael Faye, Oumou Sangare, Lokua Kanza, Mario Canonge, and Blick Bassy.
Presently based in South Africa, Nirere Shanel is gearing up for the release of her upcoming EP, "Uzaze," scheduled for January 2024. This latest project delves into the expression of women and their societal roles, promising a compelling exploration of these themes.
