Date: Saturday, April 26th, 2025
Time: 1:00-2:30 pm
Place: LRMA Interactive Gallery
Admission: Suggested donation $10.
"Reputably the most swinging, versatile and refined Gypsy Jazz ensemble in the South," Hot Club SRQ will collaborate with LRMA on a special program of jazz music inspired by the art and sounds of France and Spain in the 1930s. This program takes place on April 26, 2025, the 88th anniversary of the bombing of the village Guernica (1937) in Spain, a tragic event which inspired Pablo Picasso to paint one of his most famous works, the anti-war mural Guernica.
What to expect:
LRMA is home to the world's only authorized, full-scale reproduction of Picasso's Guernica (1937). Hot Club SRQ will transport listeners to 1930s France and Spain while performing in front of the Guernica mural in LRMA's Interactive Gallery. This curated music performance will include anecdotes and historical notes from the musicians and museum's curators for a deeper understanding of the experiences of artists and musicians in Europe as WWII loomed on the horizon.
About Hot Club SRQ:
The Hot Club of SRQ is deeply rooted in the βGypsy Jazzβ style of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli. The heart of this ensemble is the violin and vocals of Keven Aland, the guitar of Jon McLaughlin and bass playing of Glenn Stevenson. This music simply swings and is full of beauty and romance! We emulate the style of what the French call "Jazz Manouche" and "Le Jazz Hot" in the style of Sinti virtuosos and the "Quintette du Hot Club de France." However, we always like to point out that we play an extremely wide range of music and have a singular voice all our own. The Hot Club of SRQ has unique and exciting arrangements of an eclectic and often exotic repertoire of improvisationally driven music that includes everything from composers such as A. Piazzola and Debussy, to N. Hefti, C. Walton, V. Feldman and many more.
