Novos Ares started out as a humble flute and piano duo on the “magic island” of Florianópolis, Brazil in 2019, and has now expanded to a full band set-up. Annalisa Powell is a Perth-born flautist who had the joy of living in Brazil for almost a decade and now specialises in choro music (also known as Brazilian jazz). While living there, she joined forces with Cuban-Brazilian pianist Moha Builo Michel and together they formed a project to explore a most exciting array of repertoire for their formation. This show will celebrate the unique role of the Brazilian flute in a wide variety of music from all corners Brazil, featuring styles such as bossa-nova, choro, samba, baião and MPB.
The duo will be supported by Joshua de Silva on 7-string guitar and Chris Tarr on drums, and will welcome several special guests, including the stellar Brazilian singer/instrumentalist Marcio Mendes.
Following last year’s successful “concert for a cause”, proceeds from this event will be donated to a Brazilian project to provide high-quality musical education to children from low socio-economic areas and support those recovering from the devastating floods of 2024 in southern Brazil.
