Debussy “String Quartet in G Minor” and Beethoven Op. 131
Some composers do not merely write new music. They change the shape of what music can be.
In The Shape of the New, Axiom Quartet brings together two works that transformed the string quartet from within. Debussy’s only string quartet opens a door into the twentieth century, where color, atmosphere, rhythm, and harmony begin to move with new freedom. Beethoven’s Op. 131, one of the most mysterious and radical works in the quartet repertoire, unfolds in seven connected movements, drawing the listener into a continuous world of transformation.
This concert is about form becoming fluid. Debussy makes the quartet shimmer, bend, and breathe differently. Beethoven seems to suspend ordinary time altogether. Together, these works ask what happens when inherited forms are not abandoned, but remade from the inside.
The evening includes brief verbal context from the quartet, complimentary wine, and a 15-minute intermission. Business casual attire is suggested. The full concert experience will last approximately 90 minutes.
Join Axiom Quartet on Thursday, January 28 at 7:30 p.m. at Musik Halle at Houston Sängerbund, 1703 Heights Blvd., Houston, TX 77008.
