Conceptual Sculpture: Creature Bust Maquette Class

Learn how to create a traditional creature bust maquette from a thirty-year-experienced creature designer and sculptor in an intimate class setting. Lee Joyner has sculpted for such projects as Mimic, Godzilla, Stargate: SG1, Star Trek Beyond, Star Trek: DS9 and The Orville, as well as with Slipknot, Alice Cooper, Usher, Disney, Nickelodeon, McFarlane Toys and many more industry clients.

Taking cues from nature, Lee let's you see through his eyes in guiding your sculpting and design approach. Base your creature anatomy from nature, giving it emotion and weight. Understand how to make clay look like skin covering muscles which are attached to the skeleton. Learn how to sculpt texture, dynamic hair, clothing/armor and how to focus on negative space and communicating a story with just your clay work (7 students max).

About this event:

Class Goal - create a small scale creature bust sculpture out of clay.

• Learn the fundamentals of creature design in regards to a maquette bust.
• Study various concept artist's styles and approaches to design
• Understand the relationship between nature and design
• Create an armature, learning the relationship of understructure to design
• Learn the different types of sculpting tools, their uses and various advantages
• Understand the various natures of different types of sculpting clays and waxes
• Utilize skills on various methods of creating skin texture, fur, hair
• Focus on emotional impact of subtle vagaries in positive and negative shapes
• Train your eye to incorporate movement and negative space into your design
• Learn how to collaborate and communicate with client or employer
• Create a scale model creature clay bust.

LAB FEE ($130.00 non-refundable)

The Lab fee covers the cost of all of the clay and material you will be using in class. We will provide clays, armature material and various solvents. We will email you a materials list for tools and brushes needed outside of the lab materials. Students receive a professional discount at Frends Beauty on the items that they might need.
