This 2.5 day, 20 hour course is designed to provide a holistic, layered approach to effective self-defense. The objective is to impart the understanding of violence required to “see it coming” and provide skills and tactics to apply to the situations most likely encountered by citizens acting in self-defense.
In order to maximize the learning opportunity, the first four hours of the class are delivered via Internet video. These presentations cover a variety of topics and are intended both to inform and challenge students to assess their assumptions and current approach to self-defense. Topics include:
-Developing the defensive mindset and decision-making process
-Tactics and techniques to support the Awareness, Avoidance, De-Escalation, Evasion paradigm
-Conflict Communications
-Implications of 3rd party defense
And numerous other novel topics that will inform and prompt questions that only the student can for themselves.
In-person instruction begins with a Q&A regarding the video series, followed by baseline “stop the bleed” skills and practical application. Classroom work ends with a presentation on incorporating pepper spray into self-defense preparations.
Concepts and skills will be demonstrated and practiced in subsequent field and range work, and then interwoven to form easily retained and rehearsed interpersonal tactics ranging from avoidance to the application of situationally appropriate force. Training and education will occur in a combination of live and dry fire environments and those lessons validated with shooting exercises and highly controlled, non-contact force on force scenarios. Students will depart the course with skillsets and prepared responses that enable appropriate and decisive action for pre-incident, incident and post-incident circumstances.
Requirements: 250 rounds of ball ammunition (factory is preferred), the pistol you carry, a QUALITY holster (No SERPA type or floppy nylon!) 4 magazines, eye and ear protection, weather appropriate clothing, sunscreen, bug repellent, notepad and pen…the usual stuff you need on the range. Students must have had prior formal training in safety, marksmanship and presenting the pistol from concealment. All students are expected to arrive at the course with experience and training in drawing from concealment, as well as safe gun handling practices. Every student will receive two POM pepper spray trainers, and one POM live agent dispenser as part of the course fee.
